Visiting rural regions in China, you'll easily catch inhabitants there wearing 'pao', the pre-modern clothes of Han Chinese. The regions consisting of non-Han Chinese population are more unique. They are quite different from major urban regions in clothes, architecture, and language.
The same can be true of the situation in Russia. In rural Russia, there are people wearing embroidered Rubakha who look as if they came from a Slavic fairy tale.

Far from these two, Japan is ultimately homogeneous. From cities to countrysides, people's clothes are completely Westernised. There are few differences in architecture between Kyushu and Tohoku.
At present, you can hardly distinguish ethnic Ainu or Ryukyuan from Japanese by what language they use and what clothing they wear.

Such homogeneity as above urges the Japanese to believe that there exists a code of behaviour which all the Japanese naturally share, and everyone out of the code should be marginalised in society.
This is the primary reason why intellectual or talented individuals in Japan often say "Japan is deadly stifling".
