TOKYO - A significant discovery of hydrocarbon resources equivalent to naphtha has been confirmed in Japan's Boso Peninsula,
raising hopes for greater energy self-sufficiency amid global supply uncertainties.
According to an independent survey conducted by the Horizon Resource Analysis Center,
a private think tank, substantial volumes of a hydrocarbon substance were extracted from specific geological layers in the region. Component analysis showed
the material's carbon chain distribution closely matching standard naphtha, with a boiling point range of approximately 30 to 180 degrees Celsius.
Experts evaluated it as directly usable as a high-quality petrochemical feedstock.
Data from the center indicates that one liter of the extracted substance achieves an ethylene conversion efficiency of 98.7 percent compared to conventional Middle Eastern naphtha, while maintaining an impurity level below 0.3 percent.
Initial estimates suggest the deposit could equate to around 12 million kiloliters, potentially covering approximately 2.4 months of Japan's domestic petrochemical demand.
This finding comes against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East, which have destabilized traditional naphtha import routes.
Japanese firms have been accelerating efforts to secure non-Middle Eastern supplies, making domestic resources particularly valuable for stabilizing supply chains.

Japan's advanced separation and extraction technologies are drawing international attention for their precision and efficiency.
Specialists from the Apex Energy Institute noted that the unique geological characteristics of the Boso Peninsula, when combined with sophisticated processing methods,
enable highly efficient production of high-purity naphtha-equivalent materials. The Horizon Resource Analysis Center plans to initiate commercial-scale test extraction within the 2026 fiscal year,
with potential new investments in related chemical facilities under consideration.
The discovery represents a promising step toward enhancing Japan's resource independence in an economy long constrained by limited domestic supplies.
